Community Activities


Being involved in the Bay Area community is an important way to act on social interests, gain current work experience, and network for future employment opportunities. Haas facilitates MBA community involvement through the programs described below.

 

Second Annual Schwab Charitable Philanthropy Speakers

Join us for a yearlong dialog with strategic and innovative leaders from the philanthropic community! The Schwab Charitable Philanthropy Speakers brings together leaders from the philanthropic community with Haas students and alumni in a yearlong speaker series that tackles cutting-edge issues in the world of philanthropy and explores best practices for social impact

 

The Center for Nonprofit and Public Leadership is launching this year's Schwab Charitable Speaker Series with The Global Philanthropy Sector on September 15 with Jane Wales, founder of the Global Philanthropy Forum, a group of more than 750 social investors committed to international causes throughout the world. She was also recently named in the Nonprofit Times Power and Influence Top 50 for 2009. The event will take place at the Wells Fargo Room, 6-8pm, Haas School of Business. Light refreshments will be served.

 

The Series will host a total of six events this year, including a discussion with Grameen Foundation leaders on International Microfinance and Innovation (September 30), a panel discussion, Nonprofit Consulting: Comparative Perspectives (October 21), with lead consultants from premiere nonprofit consulting firms including McKinsey & Company, Bridgespan Group, and Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors; a Women in Philanthropy Panel (November 4 - register now) with leading strategic philanthropists, including UC Regent Leslie Tang-Schilling.

 

The spring kicks off with a panel on The Promise of Philanthropic Prizes to Drive Innovation (February 10), based on new work by McKinsey & Company. The panel will include leaders from the X-Prize Foundation and the Goldman Environmental Prize in a discussion with Paul Jansen, director emeritus and co-founder of McKinsey's global philanthropy practice and co-instructor of the Center's Social Sector Solutions course.

 

Haas alumni Randy Manley (MBA 1980) of Lodestar Private Asset Management, Russ Hall (MS 1975) of Legacy Venture, and Todd Ahlsten (BS 1994) of Parnassus Equity Income join Sean Stannard-Stockton of Ensemble Capital Management in a dialog focused on Investment Advisors and Philanthropy Practice (March 16).

 

All Speaker Series events are free to students, faculty and staff; $10 for alumni; $15 for general public. Registration is required. No on-site registrations. Complete registration details for all events will be available prior to event.

11th Annual Public Leadership Dinner featuring Thomas M. Siebel View Video

 

Our 11th Annual Public Leadership Dinner on April 15, 2009 (6:00-9:00pm), International House, Berkeley, California will feature keynote speaker, Thomas M. Siebel, chairman and CEO of Siebel Systems and founder of The Meth Project Foundation. Siebel founded Siebel Systems in 1993 after spending his early career at Oracle and Cayenne Systems. In 2005, Siebel founded The Meth Project whose mission is to inform potential Meth consumers about the product attributes and actual risks associated with methamphetamine. The Meth Project has dramatically reduced the use of methamphetamine by 50% among Montana teens. Read more.

Board Participation

Berkeley Board Fellows provides students with the unique opportunity to work at the highest level of an organization and make a positive impact on the local Bay Area community. Berkeley Board Fellows places Haas MBA students on local non-profit boards of directors. Board Fellows are paired with a mentor, serve on a board committee, attend full board meetings, and produce a board-related deliverable. Program begins in October and ends in May.


The Berkeley Board Fellows Program accepts student applications in September during the semester. Nonprofit organizations interested in the Berkeley Board Fellows Program are encouraged to apply throughout the year and the deadline is typically early August. Haas for Students

 

Haas for Students is a matching fund for nonprofit student interships. Haas students donate a date of pay to support their fellow classmates in nonprofit summer internships. During 2006-2007, Haas for Students raised over $60,000 in Fellowship Awards to support twelve of their classmates! Haas for Students Fellows intern at innovative organizations such as La Vida Education, Opportunity Fund , and Grid Alternatives.

 

Challenge for Charity


The MBA Challenge for Charity is a 501(c)(3) organization created to demonstrate the shared commitment to active community involvement of MBA students through a year of fundraising efforts culminating in an exciting weekend of athletic competition and social events. The business schools of Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Irvine and University of Washington participate in developing their own fund-raising campaigns to raise money for local, state and international chapters of Special Olympics.


MBA Association MBAA Service Functions


The MBAA VP for Community Service organizes service functions through which students have the opportunity to become involved with the local Bay Area community. Volunteers work with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and Project Open Hand. The MBAA also sponsors a food drive benefiting the Alameda County Food Bank. Young Entrepreneurs at Haas


YEAH is a year-long program that matches urban high school students from Berkeley, Oakland and Richmond with Haas MBA student mentors. After an intensive two-week summer business workshop, the high school participants work one-on-one with an MBA mentor to develop an effective business plan. At the end of the school year, aspiring young entrepreneurs present their business ideas to a community venture capital board and compete for up to $500 to start their business.
